Update the counter and next-send timestamp before an Agent or separate sender handles the message. This prevents duplicate sends when checks overlap.\n2. **Record the proactive message in chat history immediately**. Otherwise the next user reply lacks the message that prompted it.\n3. **Bound chat history**. Keep a fixed number of recent entries so the local context file cannot grow without limit.\n4. **Normalize escaped formatting**. This appears to be a limitation of the tool when running non-interactively.\n\nState files:\n- `~/.hermes/state/lxc_lonely_cat.json` - Current mode, counters, timestamps\n- `~/.hermes/state/lxc_chat_history.json` - Recent chat context\n- `~/.hermes/state/lxc_debug.log` - DEBUG log history\n\nFile v0.1.0:references/proactive-cost-control.md\n\n# Proactive Messaging Cost Control\n\nProactive messaging can consume substantial model tokens even when no message is sent. The expensive part is usually the scheduled Agent invocation: every run may load the full system prompt, skills, tools, memory, and session context before the checker returns `send: false`.\n\n## Recommended defaults\n\nUse conservative schedules for an Agent-backed proactive checker:\n\n```yaml\n# Run the checker once per hour, rather than every few minutes.\nschedule: \"0 * * * *\"\n```\n\n```python\n# Keep actual proactive messages at least four hours apart.\nMIN_INTERVAL = 240\nMAX_INTERVAL = 240\n```\n\nThe checker should still enforce both guards:\n\n1.
