# Book & audiobook research
Look up books, authors, reviews, and audiobooks across Goodreads, Apple
Books, and Audible as normalized JSON from the Crawlora API — no scraping
book-catalog pages.
## When to use this skill
- "What's the rating / reviews for this book?"
- "What has this author written?" (bibliography, quotes)
- "Give me a curated list" (Goodreads genre/lists pages).
- "Find this on Apple Books / is there an audiobook?"
- "What's charting on Apple Books / Audible right now?"
- "Who narrates this audiobook, and what else is in the series?" (Audible)
## Setup (one-time)
- Get a free Crawlora API key (2,000 credits/mo, no card) at [https://crawlora.net](https://crawlora.net?utm_source=github&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=crawlora-skills).
- Set `CRAWLORA_API_KEY` in the environment before running the helper.
- The helper reads `CRAWLORA_API_KEY` from the environment and sends requests to `https://api.crawlora.net/api/v1`. Missing/invalid key → `401`.
## How it works
1. **Goodreads** — `/goodreads/search` (`q`) to find a book/author id, then
`/goodreads/book/{id}` (+ `/reviews`, `/editions`) or
`/goodreads/author/{id}` (+ `/books`, `/quotes`). `/goodreads/genre/{name}`
and `/goodreads/list/{id}` (browse via `/goodreads/lists`) cover curated
browsing.
2. **Apple Books** — `/apple-books/search` (`term`) to find a book id, then
`/apple-books/book/{id}` (+ `/reviews`, `/similar`) or
`/apple-books/author/{id}`. Audiobooks mirror this:
`/apple-books/audiobook/search` → `/apple-books/audiobook/{id}` (+
`/reviews`, `/similar`), with `/apple-books/audiobook-series/{id}` and
`/apple-books/series/{id}` for series. `/apple-books/charts` shows what's
popular by country/genre.
3. **Audible** — `/audible/search` (`keywords`) to find a title's `asin`,
then `/audible/product/{asin}` for detail (narrators, runtime, series)
plus `/audible/product/{asin}/reviews` and `/audible/product/{asin}/related`.
`/audible/series/{asin}` walks a series; `/audible/categories` and
`/audible/category/{id}` browse by genre; `/audible/charts` and
`/audible/list/{list}` cover bestseller/editorial lists.

Endpoints this skill uses, grouped by platform. Call them via `scripts/crawlora.sh` (see SKILL.md).
All paths are relative to the API base `https://api.crawlora.net/api/v1` and require the header `x-api-key: $CRAWLORA_API_KEY`. Path params like `{id}` are substituted into the URL; `GET` params go in the query string; `POST` params go in a JSON body.

## Goodreads (10)
### `goodreads_author`
- **HTTP:** `GET /goodreads/author/{id}`
- **What:** Get a Goodreads author. Returns a normalized Goodreads author profile: bio, birth/death dates, website, genres, photo, and aggregate rating stats. Credential-free public Goodreads data.
- **Params:** `id` (string, **required**) — Goodreads author id
### `goodreads_author_books`
- **HTTP:** `GET /goodreads/author/{id}/books`
- **What:** List a Goodreads author's books. Returns an author's paginated works list (title, author, average rating, ratings count). Credential-free public Goodreads data.
- **Params:** `id` (string, **required**) — Goodreads author id; `page` (integer, optional) — 1-based page number, default 1
### `goodreads_author_quotes`
- **HTTP:** `GET /goodreads/author/{id}/quotes`
- **What:** List a Goodreads author's attributed quotes. Returns an author's paginated attributed-quotes list (quote text, tags, like count, and — when the quote is credited to a specific book — that book's title, id, and work id). Credential-free public Goodreads data.
- **Params:** `id` (string, **required**) — Goodreads author id; `page` (integer, optional) — 1-based page number, default 1
### `goodreads_book`
- **HTTP:** `GET /goodreads/book/{id}`
- **What:** Get a Goodreads book. Returns a normalized Goodreads book: description, authors, series, genres, format, pages, publisher, publication date, ISBNs, and aggregate rating with the full 1-5 star distribution. Credential-free public Goodreads data (goodreads.com), parsed from the book page's embedded GraphQL cache.
- **Params:** `id` (string, **required**) — Goodreads book id
### `goodreads_book_editions`
- **HTTP:** `GET /goodreads/book/{id}/editions`
- **What:** List a Goodreads book's editions. Returns a work's paginated edition list (per-edition book id, format, page count, publication date, publisher, ISBN/ISBN13/ASIN, language, and rating) — every other translation, printing, and format of the requested book id. Goodreads keys editions by a separate "work id", not the book id in the path, so this makes one extra internal request to resolve it; requests against a book with no editions data return an upstream error.
- **Params:** `id` (string, **required**) — Goodreads book id; `page` (integer, optional) — 1-based page number, default 1
### `goodreads_book_reviews`
- **HTTP:** `GET /goodreads/book/{id}/reviews`
- **What:** Get a Goodreads book's featured reviews. Returns a book'sskill-card.md
## Description: Researches books, authors, and audiobooks via the Crawlora API across Goodreads, Apple Books, and Audible, returning clean JSON for ratings, reviews, bibliographies, curated lists, audiobook details, and charts. This skill is ready for commercial/non-commercial use. ## Publisher: [crawlora-org](https://clawhub.ai/user/crawlora-org) ### License/Terms of Use: MIT-0 ## Use Case: External users and developers use this skill to research public book, author, review, list, chart, and audiobook data from Goodreads, Apple Books, and Audible through Crawlora. It is suited for answering questions about ratings, reviews, bibliographies, reading lists, audiobook availability, narrators, series, and popularity charts. ### Deployment Geography for Use: Global ## Known Risks and Mitigations: Risk: Book, author, audiobook, review, list, chart, and related query parameters are sent to Crawlora along with the user's Crawlora API key. Mitigation: Use this skill only when that third-party transmission is acceptable, and avoid sensitive private reading data. Risk: The helper requires a Crawlora API key to access the service. Mitigation: Keep CRAWLORA_API_KEY in the environment, do not hardcode or commit it, and rely on the helper's documented key-handling path. ## Reference(s): - [book-research endpoint reference](reference/endpoints.md) - [Crawlora skill page](https://clawhub.ai/crawlora-org/skills/book-research) - [Crawlora](https://crawlora.net) ## Skill Output: **Output Type(s):** [Text, Markdown, Shell commands, Configuration, JSON, Guidance] **Output Format:** [Markdown guidance with shell commands that call the Crawlora helper and return JSON API responses] **Output Parameters:** [1D] **Other Properties Related to Output:** [Requires CRAWLORA_API_KEY and sends GET requests to documented Crawlora book, author, review, list, chart, and audiobook endpoints.] ## Skill Version(s): 1.0.19 (source: server release evidence) ## Ethical Considerations: Users should evaluate whether this skill is appropriate for their environment, review any generated or modified files before relying on them, and apply their organization's safety, security, and compliance requirements before deployment.
