Assigns tasks based on skills, schedule, and fairness scoring. Instead of random rotation or nagging, this system considers each person's skills, availability, chore history, and fairness score to generate optimal weekly chore assignments. ## Quick Start ```bash # Add household members python3 scripts/chore_wheel.py add-member Mom --skills cooking,laundry python3 scripts/chore_wheel.py add-member Dad --skills repair,cooking python3 scripts/chore_wheel.py add-member Alice 14 python3 scripts/chore_wheel.py add-member Bob 10 # Define chores python3 scripts/chore_wheel.py add-chore "Cook dinner" --effort 5 --freq daily --skills cooking python3 scripts/chore_wheel.py add-chore "Take out trash" --effort 2 --freq daily python3 scripts/chore_wheel.py add-chore "Clean bathroom" --effort 4 --freq weekly # Generate this week's assignments python3 scripts/chore_wheel.py assign # Mark chores as done python3 scripts/chore_wheel.py done Mom "Cook dinner" # Check fairness python3 scripts/chore_wheel.py fairness # Weekly report python3 scripts/chore_wheel.py report ``` ## Commands | Command | Description | |---------|-------------| | `add-member <name> [age] [--skills s1,s2]` | Register a household member | | `add-chore <name> [--effort 1-5] [--freq daily\|weekly\|monthly] [--skills s1,s2]` | Define a chore | | `assign [week]` | Generate fair chore assignments | | `done <member> <chore>` | Mark a chore as completed | | `skip <member> <chore> <reason>` | Log a skipped chore | | `fairness` | Show fairness score for each member | | `report [weeks]` | Generate a multi-week chore report | | `chart` | Display this week's visual chore chart | | `swap <chore> <from_member> <to_member>` | Swap a chore between members | | `list-chores` | Show all defined chores | | `list-members` | Show all household members | | `history <member> [weeks]` | Show a member's chore history | ## How It Works ### Fairness Scoring Algorithm Each member has a **fairness score** based on: - **Total effort** accumulated over time (weighted by chore difficulty) - **Age adjustment** — younger children get lighter loads - **Skill matching** — if you're skilled at cooking, you cook more (but not exclusively) - **Recency penalty** — whoever did the unpleasant chore last time gets a break ### Effort-Weighted Rotation Chores are weighted by effort (1-5): - Effort 1: Take out trash, water plants - Effort 2: Load dishwasher, feed pets - Effort 3: Vacuum, mop floors - Effort 4: Clean bathroom, deep clean kitchen - Effort 5: Cook

# Chore Wheel Genius 🏠✨ End chore wars forever. This tool assigns household tasks fairly based on skills, availability, age, and past effort — so nobody feels overworked and nobody gets a free ride. ## The Problem Every household fights about chores: - **"That's not fair!"** — someone always feels they do more - **"It's not my turn!"** — rotation is random or forgotten - **"I always get the gross chores!"** — unpleasant tasks pile on one person - **"I don't know how to do that."** — no skill matching - **"I was busy!"** — no flexibility for schedules - **No accountability** — nobody remembers who actually did what ## The Solution An effort-weighted, skill-matched, fairness-optimized chore assignment system: 1. Each member gets chores matched to their skills and age 2. Total effort is balanced — not just chore count 3. Unpleasant tasks rotate so nobody is stuck 4. History tracks who actually did what 5. Fairness scores reveal who's carrying the load ## Features - 👨👩👧👦 **Multi-person households** — kids and adults with different capabilities - ⚖️ **Effort-weighted assignment** — 5 trash runs ≠ 5 bathroom cleans - 🎯 **Skill matching** — cooks cook, handypeople fix, everyone learns - 🔄 **Unpleasant chore rotation** — nobody always cleans the toilet - 📊 **Fairness scores** — quantitative, not emotional - 📅 **Flexible scheduling** — daily, weekly, monthly frequencies - 📈 **History tracking** — see trends and who's slacking - 🏆 **Praise detection** — identify the unsung heroes of the household - 📋 **Visual charts** — printable weekly chore chart ## Quick Start ```bash # Set up household python3 scripts/chore_wheel.py add-member Mom --skills cooking,laundry python3 scripts/chore_wheel.py add-member Dad --skills repair,cooking python3 scripts/chore_wheel.py add-member Alice 14 python3 scripts/chore_wheel.py add-member Bob 10 # Define chores python3 scripts/chore_wheel.py add-chore "Cook dinner" --effort 5 --freq daily --skills cooking python3 scripts/chore_wheel.py add-chore "Take out trash" --effort 2 --freq daily python3 scripts/chore_wheel.py add-chore "Clean bathroom" --effort 4 --freq weekly # Generate assignments python3 scripts/chore_wheel.py assign # Track completion python3 scripts/chore_wheel.py done Alice "Take out trash" # Check fairness python3 scripts/chore_wheel.py fairness ``` ## Requirements - Python 3.6+ (stdlib only) ## License MIT © Denis Voronin

## Why Age-Appropriate Chores Matter
1. **Building competence**: Children learn life skills gradually
2. **Confidence**: Success at appropriately challenging tasks builds self-esteem
3. **Family contribution**: Everyone contributes according to ability
4. **Independence**: Chore skills transfer to adult life
## Implementation in This Tool
```python
AGE_EFFORT_CAP = {
range(2, 4): 1, # Only effort-1 chores
# Fairness Algorithm ## Core Principle Fairness in a household is not about doing the same *number* of chores — it's about contributing the same *amount of effort* adjusted for age and ability. ## Effort Scoring Each chore has an effort score (1-5): | Effort | Description | Examples | |--------|-------------|----------| | 1 | Minimal | Water plants, feed pet, sort mail | | 2 | Light | Take out trash, load dishwasher, dust | | 3 | Moderate | Vacuum, mop, grocery shopping | | 4 | Heavy | Clean bathroom, deep clean kitchen, yard work | | 5 | Very Heavy | Cook full meal, major repair, move furniture | ## Fairness Calculation ### Per-Member Effort Target For a household of N members, the weekly effort target per member is: ``` target = total_chore_effort / N × age_multiplier ``` ### Age Multipliers | Age | Multiplier | Rationale | |------|-----------|-----------| | < 6 | 0.0 | Too young for chores | | 6-7 | 0.3 | Light participation | | 8-10 | 0.5 | Half the adult load | | 11-13 | 0.7 | Growing responsibility | | 14-17 | 0.85 | Nearly adult | | 18+ | 1.0 | Full responsibility | ### Skill Bonus When a member has a skill relevant to a chore, their effort for that chore is reduced by 20% (it's easier for them), but the chore still counts full effort for fairness. This naturally assigns skilled members to matching chores while keeping the effort ledger fair. ### Recency Penalty For the most unpleasant chores (effort 4-5), whoever did it last gets a +0.5 weight against being assigned again. This prevents one person from always getting the worst tasks. ## Assignment Algorithm ``` 1. Calculate each member's cumulative effort deficit/surplus 2. Sort members by deficit (most behind gets priority) 3. For each chore (sorted by effort, highest first): a. Filter members who have the required skills (if any) b. Filter by age appropriateness c. Apply recency penalty for unpleasant chores d. Assign to the eligible member with the highest deficit 4. Log assignments and update fairness ledger ``` ## Compliance Tracking Completed chores add to a member's effort ledger. Skipped chores don't. Over time: - **Effort surplus** → Member doing more than their share → Praise them - **Effort deficit** → Member doing less → Address gently - **Consistent skipper** → Pattern detection → Flag for family discussion ## Edge Cases - **Guests/visitors**: Not assigned chores - **Illness**: Member can be marked unavailable (`set-available <name> false`) - **Vacation**: Chores redistributed during absence - **New chore**: Automatically weighted and added to next rotation
