# Home Inventory
Track everything you own — for insurance claims, moving logistics, or estate planning.
## Quick Start
```bash
# Add an item
python scripts/inventory.py add \
--name "MacBook Pro" \
--category "electronics" \
--room "office" \
--value 2400 \
--brand "Apple" \
--model "MacBook Pro 14 M3" \
--serial "C02XK1234ABC" \
--purchase-date "2024-03-15" \
--notes "AppleCare+ until 2027"
# List all items
python scripts/inventory.py list
# Search by keyword
python scripts/inventory.py search "MacBook"
# Items in a specific room
python scripts/inventory.py by-room kitchen
# Total value of everything
python scripts/inventory.py total-value
# Export to CSV (for spreadsheets / insurance upload)
python scripts/inventory.py export-csv --output inventory.csv
# Insurance report (replacement cost, room-by-room breakdown)
python scripts/inventory.py insurance-report
# Depreciation report (current vs purchase value by category)
python scripts/inventory.py depreciation-report
# Assign items to moving boxes and generate box manifests
python scripts/inventory.py assign-box --item-id 3 --box "BOX-001"
python scripts/inventory.py box-manifest BOX-001
```
## Data Storage
All items are stored in `inventory.json` (configurable via `--db`). Each item has:
| Field | Description |
|-----------------|-------------------------------------|
| id | Auto-incremented unique ID |
| name | Item name |
| category | electronics, furniture, jewelry, … |
| room | Where the item lives |
| purchase_date | ISO date (YYYY-MM-DD) |
| estimated_value | Current replacement value (float) |
| brand_model | Manufacturer and model |
| serial_number | Serial number for ID/claims |
| photo_path | Path to a photo of the item |
| qr_label_id | QR label identifier |
| box_id | Moving box assignment |
| notes | Free-text notes |
## Depreciation Model
Depreciation rates are defined by category in `references/depreciation-tables.md`:
- **Electronics**: fast depreciation (~25%/yr, ~5yr lifespan)
- **Furniture**: slow depreciation (~8%/yr, ~15yr lifespan)
- **Appliances**: moderate (~12%/yr, ~10yr lifespan)
- **Clothing**: fast (~20%/yr, ~5yr lifespan)
- **Jewelry**: appreciates (~3%/yr)
- **Art/Collectibles**: appreciates (~5%/yr)
See `references/depreciation-tables.md` for full detaiREADME.md

# Depreciation Tables
> Expected lifespan and annual depreciation rates by category.
These tables are used by `scripts/inventory.py` to calculate current (depreciated) values. Adjust the rates in the script's `DEPRECIATION_RATES` dictionary to match your local market conditions or insurer guidelines.
## How Depreciation Is Calculated
```
current_value = original_value × (1 - annual_rate × years_since_purchase)
```
- Capped at the item's **typical lifespan** — value stops declining after that.
- For appreciating categories (jewelry, art), the formula reverses:
```
current_value = original_value × (1 + appreciation_rate × years_since_purchase)
```
## Rate Table
| Category | Annual Rate | Direction | Typical Lifespan | Notes |
|----------------|-------------|--------------|------------------|----------------------------------------|
| Electronics | 25% | Depreciating | 5 years | TVs, computers, phones, audio gear |
| Appliances | 12% | Depreciating | 10 years | Fridge, washer, oven, dishwasher |
| Furniture | 8% | Depreciating | 15 years | Sofas, tables, beds, shelving |
| Clothing | 20% | Depreciating | 5 years | Everyday wear; designer may appreciate |
| Tools | 10% | Depreciating | 12 years | Power tools, hand tools, workshop |
| Sports | 12% | Depreciating | 8 years | Bikes, camping, fitness equipment |
| Books | 10% | Depreciating | 20 years | First editions/collectible may appreciate |
| Jewelry | 3% | **Appreciating** | 100 years | Gold/diamond values track inflation+ |
| Art | 5% | **Appreciating** | 100 years | Original works, limited prints |
| Collectibles | 4% | **Appreciating** | 100 years | Coins, stamps, vintage toys |
| Vehicles | 15% | Depreciating | 12 years | Cars, motorcycles, scooters |
| Musical | 6% | Depreciating | 25 years | Instruments, audio gear |
| Other | 10% | Depreciating | 10 years | Default for uncategorized items |
## Worked Examples
### Electronics — Laptop purchased 3 years ago for $2,000
```
annual_rate = 25%, lifespan = 5 years
years = 3 (under lifespan cap)
current = $2,000 × (1 - 0.25 × 3)
= $2,000 × 0.25
= $500
```
### Furniture — Sofa purchased 10 years ago for $1,500
```
annual_rate = 8%, lifespan = 15 years
years = 10 (under lifespan cap)
current = $1,500 × (1 - 0.08 × 10)
= $1,500 × 0.20
= $300
```
### Jewelry — Ring purchased 5 years ago for $5,000
```
appreciation_rate = 3% (appreciates)
current = $5,000 × (1 + 0.03 × 5)
= $5,000 × 1.15
= $5,750
```
## Adjusting Rates
Open `scripts/inventory.py` and edit the `DEPRECIATION_RATES` references/insurance-claims-guide.md
# Insurance Claims Guide > What to document **before** you need to file a claim. ## Why Document Now? After a fire, flood, or burglary, you're stressed, grieving, and under pressure from your insurer. Trying to reconstruct what you owned from memory — with receipts, serial numbers, and values — is nearly impossible. A home inventory built **before** a loss is the single most powerful tool for a smooth, fair claim settlement. ## What to Document for Each Item | Field | Why it matters | |------------------|------------------------------------------------------------| | **Photo** | Visual proof the item existed and its condition | | **Serial number**| Proves ownership; insurers and police use it to match recovered stolen goods | | **Brand/model** | Needed for replacement cost calculation (like-for-like) | | **Purchase date**| Establishes age and depreciation | | **Receipt** | Gold-standard proof of value; store digitally | | **Estimated value** | What it would cost to replace today (not what you paid) | ## The 4 Evidence Levels (Strongest → Weakest) 1. **Receipt + photo + serial** — bulletproof 2. **Photo + serial** — very strong 3. **Photo + brand/model** — good 4. **Written description only** — better than nothing, but expect pushback ## Photo Best Practices - Take photos in good lighting, items in their normal location - Capture serial number plates up close (legible) - Show condition — open doors, drawers, turn on electronics - For sets (dining room, tools), photograph the whole set together - Store photos **off-site** — cloud, external drive at a relative's house, safety deposit box ## Coverage Types — Know the Difference | Coverage | What it pays | |-----------------------|---------------------------------------------------| | **Actual Cash Value (ACV)** | Replacement cost **minus depreciation** | | **Replacement Cost (RC)** | What it costs to buy a new equivalent item | Always check your policy. RC coverage is worth the extra premium for most households. ## Special Categories Need Extra Attention ### Jewelry & Watches - Almost always require a separate **rider or scheduled personal property endorsement** - Get professional appraisals every 3–5 years - Photos must show the piece clearly (on a neutral background) ### Art & Collectibles - Professional appraisal required for items above your policy's single-article limit - Keep provenance documents (certificates of authenticity, purchase records) ### Electronics - Serial numbers are critical (police check these against stolen-goods databases) - Note warranty/AppleCare+ status — may cover replacement separately ### Firearms - Require separate scheduling in most policies - Record serial numbers, make, model, and caliber ## High-Value Items (>$1,000) These items are the most disputed during claims.
