# Symptom Timeline

Track symptoms over time. Find what triggers them. Generate doctor-ready reports.

## Quick Start

```bash
# Log a symptom with triggers
python3 scripts/symptom_tracker.py log \
  --name headache \
  --severity 7 \
  --triggers "poor sleep,stress,caffeine"
# View all entries chronologically
python3 scripts/symptom_tracker.py timeline
# Find what triggers your symptoms
python3 scripts/symptom_tracker.py correlate
# Get a doctor-ready summary
python3 scripts/symptom_tracker.py summary
# Export a plain-text report for your appointment
python3 scripts/symptom_tracker.py export --output report.txt
```

## Commands

| Command | Description |
|---------|-------------|
| `log` | Record a symptom (name, severity 1-10, time, notes, triggers) |
| `timeline` | Show chronological log, optionally filtered by name or date range |
| `correlate` | Detect trigger-symptom patterns and co-occurring symptoms |
| `summary` | Generate a doctor-ready report with trends and triggers |
| `flare-up` | Detect worsening patterns (consecutive high severity, sudden jumps) |
| `heatmap` | ASCII severity heatmap over days/weeks |
| `export` | Export a plain-text report for a doctor visit |

## Trigger Categories

The script auto-categorizes triggers into:

- **food** — meals, dairy, gluten, caffeine, alcohol, etc.
- **stress** — anxiety, work pressure, deadlines
- **weather** — humidity, barometric pressure, temperature
- **medication** — drugs, doses, missed medications
- **sleep** — insomnia, poor sleep, fatigue
- **activity** — exercise, prolonged sitting/standing

You can also use explicit prefixes: `food:dairy`, `weather:high humidity`.

## Data Storage

All data is stored in `symptom_db.json` (in the skill directory by default).
Use `--db /path/to/file.json` to specify a custom location.

- **Flare-Up Detection** — Flags consecutive high-severity episodes and sudden jumps
- **Severity Heatmap** — Visual ASCII heatmap of symptom intensity over time
- **Doctor Report Export** — Clean, chronological plain-text report for appointments

## Quick Start

```bash
# Log a symptom
python3 scripts/symptom_tracker.py log \
  --name headache \
  --severity 7 \
  --triggers "poor sleep,stress"
# See your timeline
python3 scripts/symptom_tracker.py timeline
# Find patterns
python3 scripts/symptom_tracker.py correlate
# Generate a summary
python3 scripts/symptom_tracker.py summary
# Detect flare-ups
python3 scripts/symptom_tracker.py flare-up
# Visualize severity
python3 scripts/symptom_tracker.py heatmap --name headache --days 30
# Export for your doctor
python3 scripts/symptom_tracker.py export --output report.txt
```

## Trigger Categories

Triggers are auto-categorized into: **food, stress, weather, medication, sleep, activity**.

```bash
# Explicit category prefix
python3 scripts/symptom_tracker.py log --name "joint pain" --severity 6 \
  --triggers "weather:high humidity,activity:long walk"
# Auto-categorized
python3 scripts/symptom_tracker.py log --name migraine --severity 8 \
  --triggers "chocolate,deadline,poor sleep"
```

## Requirements

- Python 3.7+ (stdlib only, no pip dependencies)

## Data

All entries are stored in `symptom_db.json`. Use `--db path.json` to customize.

# Doctor Visit Preparation

How to present your symptom data effectively during medical appointments.

---

## Before the Visit

1. **Generate your report** at least a day before:
   ```bash
   python3 scripts/symptom_tracker.py export --output my_report.txt
   python3 scripts/symptom_tracker.py summary
   ```

2. **Review correlations** to understand your patterns:
   ```bash
   python3 scripts/symptom_tracker.py correlate
   ```

3. **Check for flare-ups** so you can discuss them:
   ```bash
   python3 scripts/symptom_tracker.py flare-up
   ```

4. **Highlight the top 3 issues** you want to discuss — doctors have limited time.

## During the Visit

### Lead with the summary, not the raw data
Doctors are time-pressed. Start with:
- "I've been tracking my symptoms for [X weeks]."
- "My top concern is [symptom] — it's been [trending up/stable/spiking]."
- "I've noticed it correlates with [trigger]."

### Bring the printed report
Hand over the exported text report. It provides:
- A clear timeline they can scan
- Objective severity data (not just "it's been bad")
- Identified triggers they can evaluate
- Medications you've taken (so they can check interactions)

### Key questions to ask
- "Does this pattern match what you'd expect for [condition]?"
- "Could any of these triggers be modified?"
- "Should I adjust my medication based on this data?"
- "Are there additional symptoms I should be tracking?"
- "Does the severity trend suggest we need to change the treatment plan?"

## What Doctors Look For

| Data Point | Why It Matters |
|-----------|----------------|
| **Frequency** | How often = severity of the condition |
| **Severity trend** | Worsening = treatment may need adjusting |
| **Triggers** | Avoidable triggers = actionable advice |
| **Response to medication** | Did severity drop after starting a med? |
| **Flare-up patterns** | Helps predict and prevent future episodes |
| **Co-occurring symptoms** | May indicate a unified underlying cause |

## Effective Communication Tips

1. **Be quantifiable** — "7 out of 10, three times this week" beats "it's been really bad."
2. **Show trends** — "It was a 5 last month, now it's an 8" is powerful information.
3. **Don't over-explain** — let the report speak; fill in context when asked.
4. **Mention medication changes** — if you started/stopped anything, flag it.
5. **Ask for a follow-up plan** — what to track next, when to come back.

## After the Visit

- Log any new diagnoses or medication changes as notes
- Add any new tracking recommendations from the doctor
- Continue logging to measure whether the new treatment plan is working
- Run `correlate` after 2-4 weeks to see if patterns have shifted

# Symptom Tracking Guide

What to track for common chronic conditions. Use this as a reference when logging
symptoms to ensure you're capturing the data that matters.

---

## Migraines / Headaches

**Key symptoms to track:**
- Pain location (one-sided, behind eyes, temples, back of head)
- Pain type (throbbing, pressure, sharp, dull)
- Severity (1-10)
- Duration (minutes to days)
- Aura (visual disturbances, sensitivity to light/sound)
- Nausea or vomiting

**Common triggers to log:**
- **Food**: chocolate, aged cheese, MSG, nitrates, red wine, caffeine (or withdrawal)
- **Sleep**: too little, too much, disrupted
- **Stress**: high-pressure events, let-down after stress
- **Weather**: barometric pressure changes, bright sun, heat
- **Hormonal**: menstrual cycle (if applicable)
- **Activity**: intense exertion, screen time

## Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

**Key symptoms to track:**
- Abdominal pain/cramping (location, severity)
- Bloating
- Bowel movement type (diarrhea, constipation, mixed) — compare to Bristol scale
- Urgency
- Gas

**Common triggers to log:**
- **Food**: FODMAPs (onions, garlic, wheat, dairy, beans), spicy food, fatty food, caffeine, alcohol
- **Stress**: anxiety, social pressure, work
- **Sleep**: poor sleep worsens gut motility
- **Medication**: antibiotics, new supplements
- **Activity**: eating too fast, irregular meal times

## Arthritis / Joint Pain

**Key symptoms to track:**
- Joint(s) affected (which fingers, knees, hips, etc.)
- Pain severity (1-10)
- Stiffness (morning stiffness duration is a key metric)
- Swelling or warmth
- Range of motion limitation
- Fatigue

**Common triggers to log:**
- **Weather**: humidity, cold, rain, barometric pressure drops
- **Activity**: overexertion, repetitive motion, new exercise
- **Food**: nightshades (tomatoes, peppers, potatoes), sugar, alcohol (varies by person)
- **Sleep**: poor sleep increases pain sensitivity
- **Medication**: missed doses, NSAIDs, biologic timing

## Autoimmune Conditions (Lupus, RA, Psoriasis, etc.)

**Key symptoms to track:**
- Joint pain and swelling
- Fatigue severity (1-10) — track separately from pain
- Skin changes (rashes, lesions, photosensitivity)
- Fever (low-grade)
- Flare frequency and duration
- Medication side effects

**Common triggers to log:**
- **Stress**: emotional or physical stress is a top flare trigger
- **Sleep**: exhaustion is both a trigger and a symptom
- **Weather**: sun exposure (especially lupus), UV index, temperature extremes
- **Medication**: dose changes, missed medications, new drugs
- **Food**: alcohol, processed foods (inflammatory)
- **Activity**: overexertion triggers post-exertional malaise

## General Tips

1. **Log immediately** — memory degrades quickly. Log symptoms as they happen.
2. **Be consistent** — log even mild symptoms (severity 1-3). Baselines matter.
3. **Track the absence** — note when you feel good too. Patterns need contrast.
4. **Be specific with triggers** — "ate pizza" is better than "bad food
