# Tax Doc Collector

A standalone command-line tool for tracking tax-deductible expenses throughout
the year. Instead of a shoebox of receipts in April, maintain a clean,
categorized, audit-ready expense log with real-time tax savings estimates.

## Quick Start

```bash
# Set your tax bracket
python3 scripts/tax_docs.py setup --bracket 24
# Log deductible expenses as they happen
python3 scripts/tax_docs.py add --amount 45.99 --category "office supplies" --merchant "Staples" --note "printer ink"
python3 scripts/tax_docs.py add --amount 120.00 --category "meals" --merchant "Business Lunch" --note "client meeting"
python3 scripts/tax_docs.py add --amount 250.00 --category "charity" --merchant "Red Cross"
# Add a mileage deduction
python3 scripts/tax_docs.py add-mileage --miles 45 --purpose "client visit"
# See your year-to-date summary
python3 scripts/tax_docs.py summary
# Check audit risk
python3 scripts/tax_docs.py audit-risk
# Export for tax filing
python3 scripts/tax_docs.py export schedule-c
python3 scripts/tax_docs.py export schedule-a
```

## How It Works

### IRS Category Matching
Expenses are categorized into IRS-recognized categories:

**Schedule C (Self-employed / Business):**
- Advertising, Car/truck expenses, Commissions, Contract labor, Depletion
- Depreciation, Employee benefits, Insurance, Interest (mortgage/other)
- Legal/professional services, Office expenses, Pension/profit-sharing
- Rent/lease, Repairs/maintenance, Supplies, Taxes/licenses
- Travel/meals,

# Tax Doc Collector 🧾💰

Stop the April panic. Track deductible expenses year-round with smart IRS
categorization, real-time tax savings estimates, audit risk flags, and
one-command export to Schedule C / Schedule A format.

## The Problem

Every year, the same nightmare:
- **"Where are my receipts?"** — a shoebox, a email folder, a vague memory
- **"Was that deductible?"** — you forgot what counts
- **"How much did I spend on X?"** — no running total
- **"My accountant charges $500/hr to sort this"** — because you didn't
- **"Did I miss deductions?"** — you probably did, losing real money
- **Audit fear** — no documentation, no mileage log, no proof

## The Solution

A year-round expense tracker purpose-built for tax deductions:

1. Log expenses the moment they happen (30 seconds)
2. Automatic IRS category matching (Schedule C and Schedule A)
3. Real-time savings estimate: "That $45 receipt saves you $10.80 in taxes"
4. Audit risk scoring: flagged before the IRS flags them
5. One-command export for your accountant or tax software

## Features

- 🧾 **Expense logging** — amount, merchant, category, date, notes
- 🏷️ **IRS categories** — pre-mapped to Schedule C and Schedule A line items
- 🚗 **Mileage tracking** — current IRS standard mileage rates
- 🏠 **Home office** — simplified or detailed method calculation
- 💰 **Real-time savings** — see tax impact of every deduction
- ⚠️ **Audit risk** — flags statistically risky deductions
- 📊 **Year-to-date summary** — running totals by category
- 📤 **Export** — Schedule C, Schedule A, or CSV format
- 🔍 **Searchable** — find any expense by category, merchant, or date
- 📅 **Multi-year** — separate tracking per tax year

## Quick Start

```bash
# Set up (once per year)
python3 scripts/tax_docs.py setup --bracket 24
# Log expenses as they happen
python3 scripts/tax_docs.py add --amount 45.99 --category "office supplies" --merchant "Staples"
python3 scripts/tax_docs.py add --amount 120.00 --category "meals" --merchant "Olive Garden" --note "client lunch"
python3 scripts/tax_docs.py add-mileage --miles 32 --purpose "client meeting"
# Check progress
python3 scripts/tax_docs.py summary
# At tax time
python3 scripts/tax_docs.py export schedule-c
```

# Audit Risk Factors

## Overview

The IRS uses automated screening (DIF scores — Discriminant Information
Function) to flag returns for audit. Understanding these triggers helps you
prepare documentation before you need it.

**Disclaimer:** This tool provides general guidance based on publicly known
IRS audit factors. It is NOT tax advice. Always consult a qualified tax
professional.

## High-Risk Categories

### 1. Large Meals & Entertainment Deductions
- **Trigger**: Meals exceeding 2-3% of gross revenue (Schedule C)
- **Why**: IRS knows this category is heavily abused
- **Mitigation**: Log date, attendees, business purpose, and amount
- **Rule**: Only 50% deductible; keep itemized receipts (not credit card totals)

### 2. Charitable Contributions Disproportionate to Income
- **Trigger**: Charity > 5-10% of AGI (varies by income bracket)
- **Why**: Overstating donations is a common evasion tactic
- **Mitigation**: Keep written acknowledgments for gifts ≥$250
- **Non-cash**: Document item descriptions and fair market value; get receipt
  from organization

### 3. Home Office Deduction with No Profit
- **Trigger**: Claiming home office when business shows a loss 3+ out of 5 years
- **Why**: IRS may reclassify "business" as a hobby
- **Mitigation**: Demonstrate profit motive (marketing, business plan, growth)
- **Hobby loss rule**: 2 of 5 years must show profit

### 4. Vehicle Expenses Without Mileage Log
- **Trigger**: Claiming 100% business use, or large vehicle deduction
- **Why**: Impossible to verify without a contemporaneous log
- **Mitigation**: Keep a log with date, miles, starting/ending locations, purpose
- **Standard mileage** is generally safer than actual expenses

### 5. Cash Transactions Over $10,000
- **Trigger**: Any cash transaction ≥$10,000 (Form 8300 required)
- **Why**: Anti-money laundering rules
- **Mitigation**: Report properly; never "structure" transactions to avoid

### 6. Round Numbers
- **Trigger**: Deductions like $5,000 exactly, $1,200 exactly
- **Why**: Looks estimated rather than actual
- **Mitigation**: Log actual amounts ($4,987.32 not $5,000)

### 7. Independent Contractor (1099) Income
- **Trigger**: High 1099 income relative to W-2, especially in cash-heavy industries
- **Why**: Income underreporting is the largest tax gap component
- **Mitigation**: Report all income including cash; match 1099s to your records

### 8. Claiming Dependents Incorrectly
- **Trigger**: Multiple returns claiming same dependent
- **Why**: Custody disputes, divorce situations
- **Mitigation**: Only one parent can claim; have custody agreement documented

### 9. Cryptocurrency Transactions
- **Trigger**: Any crypto activity (now asked on Form 1040)
- **Why**: IRS has increased enforcement on crypto
- **Mitigation**: Track every transaction; report gains/losses on Schedule D

### 10. Foreign Accounts
- **Trigger**: FBAR (FinCEN 114) if aggregate >$10,000 in foreign accounts
- **Why**: Anti-tax-evasion (FATCA)
- **Mitigation**: Report
