Academic Writing Check

Use the original checkwriting script when available. Fall back to manual, rule-based review only when the script cannot run.

Workflow

  1. Locate the checker.
    • Prefer ./checkwriting in the current repository.
    • Otherwise use checkwriting from PATH.
    • If no checker is available, run fallback review and label results as heuristic.
  2. Run the helper wrapper from this skill.
    • Use scripts/run_awc.sh --strip-ansi <target...> for structured summaries.
    • Pipe unified diff into stdin for incremental review.
  3. Prioritize findings in this order.
    • passive, typography, abbr, dups, weasel, strunk, user
  4. Convert flagged spans into concrete rewrites.
    • Give suggested sentence edits, not abstract advice.
    • Keep file and line references when available.

Operation Modes

  • Single file: scripts/run_awc.sh --strip-ansi path/to/file.tex
  • Directory (*.tex and *.bbl only): scripts/run_awc.sh --strip-ansi path/to/directory
  • Diff-only check: git diff | scripts/run_awc.sh --strip-ansi
  • Vim-compatible markers: scripts/run_awc.sh -v path/to/file.tex
  • Custom word list: scripts/run_awc.sh --wordfile=path/to/awc_wordlist path/to/file.tex

Inline Ignore Pragmas

The checker supports line-preserving inline ignore pragmas in LaTeX comments.

  • Ignore current line: % awc: ignore-line
  • Ignore next line: % awc: ignore-next-line
  • Ignore a block: % awc: ignore-start % awc: ignore-end

You can scope a pragma to specific detectors with a comma-separated list in brackets.

  • Ignore passive and weasel checks on the current line: % awc: ignore-line[passive,weasel]
  • Ignore passive checks on the next line: % awc: ignore-next-line[passive]
  • Ignore a block for selected detectors: % awc: ignore-start[passive,weasel] % awc: ignore-end[passive,weasel]

Notes:

  • Directive lines are ignored by the checker.
  • If no detector list is provided, the pragma applies to all detectors.
  • Supported detector names are passive, dups, weasel, abbr, typography, strunk, and user.
  • Unknown detector names are ignored and reported as warnings.
  • Ignored lines are masked before lint checks, while preserving original line numbers.

Preserve detector names and counts exactly as emitted by the checker.

Fallback Review

If checkwriting cannot run, apply these mirror heuristics:

  • Passive voice: form of be + past participle.
  • Weasel words: vague intensifiers (very, clearly, significantly, etc.).
  • Duplicates: adjacent repeated token (the the).
  • Abbreviations: malformed i.e, e.g, et al.
  • Typography: raw URLs not wrapped in \url{}, \footnote punctuation placement, acronym sentence ending that needs \@.
  • Strunk-style list: phrases like as yet, in terms of, very unique, and sentence-start However after punctuation.
  • User terms: local patterns from ~/.awc_wordlist, awc_wordlist, or an explicit --wordfile.

State explicitly that fallback findings are approximate and may differ from script output.

References

  • Detector semantics and false-positive notes: references/check-taxonomy.md
  • Invocation patterns and troubleshooting: references/operation-modes.md

Validation

  • Run core upstream regression checks: scripts/verify_awc.sh <repo-root>
  • Run inline ignore regression checks: scripts/verify_awc_inline_ignores.sh [checker-path]
  • If you extend checker behavior, update fixtures in test/inline_ignores/ and keep both scripts passing.
