LastPass CLI

The lpass command line interface for LastPass password manager.

Workflow

Check CLI is installed: lpass --version
Check login status: lpass status
If not logged in, use tmux session for login (see below)
Set LPASS_AGENT_TIMEOUT=0 to keep session alive indefinitely
Use --trust flag on login to trust this device

REQUIRED: Persistent Agent Setup

The lpass agent times out after 1 hour by default. To keep it running forever:

export LPASS_AGENT_TIMEOUT=0

Add this to your shell profile (~/.zshrc, ~/.bashrc) for persistence across restarts.

REQUIRED: tmux Session for Login

The shell tool uses a fresh TTY per command. To avoid password prompt issues, always run lpass login inside a dedicated tmux session.

Guardrails

Never paste master password or secrets into logs or chat
Use --clip to copy to clipboard instead of displaying
Prefer LPASS_AGENT_TIMEOUT=0 over frequent re-logins
If commands return "Not logged in", re-run login in tmux
Do not run lpass login outside tmux; stop and ask if tmux is unavailable

Troubleshooting

Session keeps timing out:

Ensure LPASS_AGENT_TIMEOUT=0 is set in your shell profile
The agent process must stay running; check with pgrep lpass

Password prompt not working:

Use tmux session for interactive login
Set LPASS_DISABLE_PINENTRY=1 if pinentry causes issues

Two-factor authentication:

If 2FA is enabled, you'll be prompted after password
Use lpass login --trust to avoid repeated 2FA prompts
