Mini SWE Agent

This directory contains a minimal, runnable coding-agent loop inspired by tools like Codex and Claude Code. It is intentionally small: no LangChain, AutoGen, CrewAI, or hidden framework.

Architecture

  • run.py: command-line entry point.
  • agent.py: main loop, step logging, touched-file tracking, and final summary.
  • state.py: dataclasses for agent state and history.
  • llm.py: OpenAI-compatible Chat Completions client.
  • prompt_builder.py: system and user prompt construction with bounded history.
  • parser.py: robust JSON action parser.
  • executor.py: dispatches parsed actions to tools.
  • tool_spec.py: tool schema and behavioral rules for the model.
  • tools/file_io.py: safe file read/write/search inside the target repo.
  • tools/terminal.py: terminal execution with timeout and simple dangerous-command blocking.
  • tools/patch.py: git apply, git diff, and git status helpers.

Environment

Usage

From the repository root:

python mini_swe_agent/run.py --repo /path/to/target/repo --task "Fix the failing test related to xxx" --max-steps 20

Supported Tools

  • read_file: read a repository file with line numbers, capped at 800 lines.
  • write_file: write a full file inside the repository.
  • search: search text files and return up to 100 matches.
  • run_terminal: run a shell command in the target repo with timeout and output truncation.
  • apply_patch: apply a unified diff via git apply --whitespace=nowarn.
  • git_diff: inspect current diff.
  • git_status: inspect short git status.
  • finish: end the loop with a final answer.

Current Limitations

  • Context management is coarse and only keeps recent bounded history.
  • Patch application can fail and there is no automatic patch retry strategy.
  • Large repositories may require better file discovery and repo maps.
  • The terminal tool has safety risks despite simple blocking and timeouts.
  • There is no permission system or sandbox execution layer.
  • Test-failure diagnosis is entirely model-driven.
  • This is not a production-grade coding agent.
