Smart_Frontend

Canned-question chatbot. The user picks from a curated bank of questions, the agent answers, and a new batch of questions appears — repeating. The LLM never invents questions; it only selects IDs from backend/data/questions.yaml.

React + assistant-ui ──► FastAPI ──► AWS Bedrock

Two LLM calls per turn, fired in parallel from the frontend:

  • POST /chat — Strands Agent streams the answer (Sonnet).
  • POST /suggestions — stateless Bedrock call (Haiku, forced tool use) picks 3–4 question IDs from the bank. Input is the user's question + previous user questions. Never sees the assistant's answer — selection is based on user intent, not our reply.

By the time the answer finishes streaming (~3–6s), chips are already sitting there (~300–500ms).

Run

Requires Python 3.13, Node ≥20, uv, and AWS credentials with Bedrock access to Sonnet 4.5 + Haiku 4.5 in us-west-2 (or override via env).

Editing the question bank

Edit backend/data/questions.yaml. Each entry needs an id, text, and tags. Tag intro marks questions shown on an empty thread. The frontend hot-loads the bank on page refresh; the backend caches it once at import time (restart uvicorn to pick up changes).

Verification

  3. Open http://localhost:5173. Intro chips render.
  4. Click a chip. In DevTools → Network, confirm /chat and /suggestions are dispatched at roughly the same timestamp. /suggestions should complete well before /chat finishes streaming.
  5. The answer streams into the bubble; new chips replace the previous batch.
  6. Refresh the page (same session_id in localStorage). Continue the conversation — the agent remembers prior turns via Strands FileSessionManager (state on disk in backend/sessions/).

Architecture decision: why two LLM calls

  • Cost: Haiku is ~10× cheaper than Sonnet. Sonnet doing ID-picking is overkill.
  • Latency: Selector runs in parallel with the answer stream → its cost hides entirely behind the answer.
  • Failure surface: Each piece swaps/A-B-tests independently. Structured Outputs (forced tool use) means the selector physically cannot invent IDs.

If you want one model doing both, replace suggestions.py with a tool exposed to the chat agent (select_next_questions(question_ids)) and have the frontend read both events from a single SSE stream. Same product, simpler infra, slower perceived chip render.

  • Authentication / multi-user isolation
  • Embedding-based bank pre-filter (only matters once bank > 50)
  • Persistent conversation log beyond on-disk FileSessionManager
