🔁 Bare Agent Loop — DeepSeek
A hand-written AI agent with zero frameworks. No LangChain, no LangGraph, no CrewAI — just raw API calls and a while loop.
What Is This?
Most AI "agents" you see are built on top of orchestration frameworks like LangChain or LangGraph. Those frameworks are great — but they hide a lot of the mechanics of how an agent actually works.
This project strips all of that away and builds an agent from scratch, so you can see exactly what happens under the hood:
- You give the agent a goal (e.g. "What is (245 × 12) − 891, then divide by 3?")
- The agent calls the LLM (DeepSeek, via the OpenAI SDK)
- The LLM decides whether it needs a tool (like a calculator) or can answer directly
- If a tool is needed, the agent runs it and feeds the result back to the LLM
- The loop repeats until the LLM produces a final answer
The Streamlit UI makes every one of these steps visible — you can see the raw API calls, the tool arguments the model generated, the finish_reason that drives the loop, and the full JSON message history growing turn by turn.
Why Does This Matter?
If you're evaluating whether someone understands AI agents vs. just importing a library, this is the proof. The entire agent loop is ~60 lines of Python. Everything else is just making it visible.
Quick Start
1. Clone & install
git clone <this-repo>
cd raw-agent
pip install -r requirements.txt
2. Set your API key

$env:DEEPSEEK_API_KEY = "sk-your-key-here"
Or just paste it into the sidebar when the app launches — no env var required.
3. Run
streamlit run app.py
That's it. Open the URL Streamlit prints (usually http://localhost:8501) and try a question.
Project Structure

Adding a New Tool
- Write the function in
bare_agent_loop_deepseek.py - Add its JSON schema to the
TOOLSlist - Register it in
TOOL_REGISTRY
The UI renders tool calls generically — no UI changes needed.
