Dr. Vault

You have access to the Dr. Vault credential proxy running on the host. The proxy intercepts outbound HTTP requests containing $vault: references and resolves them to real secrets at the transport layer. You can check its status, configure settings, and run diagnostics.

The proxy listens at http://host.docker.internal:19789. All commands use curl against this address.

How the proxy works

Your config (openclaw.json) contains opaque vault references like $vault:slack.botToken:01932b40-c49b-7da0-8fba-1f8a2c3d4e5f instead of real secrets. When a service SDK makes an outbound HTTP request containing a $vault: reference (in a header, URL, or body), a request interceptor routes it through the proxy. The proxy replaces the reference with the real secret and forwards the request to the target API.

You never see or handle real secrets. They exist only on the host side.

Important

  • You CANNOT access, reveal, or resolve secrets. The proxy resolves secrets at the transport layer — they never enter the container.
  • You CAN check status, view/change settings, and run diagnostics.
  • Never attempt to call /v1/forward — it is used by the request interceptor, not by you.

Check Vault Status

When the user asks about vault health, proxy status, or how many secrets are loaded:

curl -s http://host.docker.internal:19789/v1/health | python3 -m json.tool

Response fields:

  • status — should be "ok"
  • uptime — how long the proxy has been running
  • secrets_loaded — number of secrets in the encrypted vault
  • references_loaded — number of active $vault:KEY:UUID references the proxy can resolve
  • forward_requests — total number of requests forwarded through the proxy since startup
  • auto_migrate — whether automatic secret migration is enabled
  • pending_secrets — number of plaintext secrets detected but not yet migrated

Example interpretation:

  • If references_loaded is 0: the proxy has no secret references to resolve — the user may need to run dr-vault up to generate references
  • If secrets_loaded is 0: warn the user that no secrets are in the vault
  • If forward_requests is increasing: the proxy is actively resolving secrets for outbound API calls (healthy)
  • If pending_secrets > 0 and auto_migrate is false: tell the user there are unmigrated secrets and suggest enabling auto-migrate

View Settings

When the user asks about vault configuration or settings:

curl -s http://host.docker.internal:19789/v1/settings | python3 -m json.tool

Response fields:

  • autoMigrate — whether the proxy automatically migrates plaintext secrets from openclaw.json into the encrypted vault
  • pendingSecrets — number of plaintext secrets waiting to be migrated

Change Settings

Enable auto-migration

When the user wants to enable automatic migration of plaintext secrets:

curl -s -X POST http://host.docker.internal:19789/v1/settings \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"autoMigrate": true}' | python3 -m json.tool

After enabling, the proxy will immediately scan openclaw.json for plaintext secrets matching proxyable field names (apiKey, botToken, appToken, serviceAccount) and migrate them into the encrypted vault.

Disable auto-migration

When the user wants to stop automatic migration:

curl -s -X POST http://host.docker.internal:19789/v1/settings \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"autoMigrate": false}' | python3 -m json.tool

The proxy will still detect and count pending secrets, but won't migrate them automatically.

Run Diagnostics

When the user asks to check if everything is working, run both health and settings checks:

echo "=== Vault Health ===" && \
curl -s http://host.docker.internal:19789/v1/health | python3 -m json.tool && \
echo "=== Vault Settings ===" && \
curl -s http://host.docker.internal:19789/v1/settings | python3 -m json.tool

Interpret the combined output:

  1. Healthy state: status=ok, references_loaded > 0, forward_requests increasing, pending_secrets=0
  2. Needs attention: pending_secrets > 0 means plaintext secrets exist in openclaw.json that could be migrated
  3. Problem: status != ok or references_loaded = 0 means the proxy may not be configured correctly
  4. Proxy unreachable: if curl fails, the proxy isn't running — tell the user to run dr-vault up on the host

Troubleshooting

If the proxy is unreachable (curl connection refused):

  • The proxy runs on the host machine, not inside Docker
  • The user needs to run dr-vault up or dr-vault proxy start on their host terminal
  • You cannot start/stop the proxy from inside the container

If references_loaded is 0:

  • The proxy has no references to resolve — dr-vault up needs to be run to generate the config transform
  • Or the vault may be empty — the user needs to run dr-vault migrate on the host first

If secrets_loaded is 0:

  • The vault may be empty — the user needs to run dr-vault migrate on the host
  • Or the vault may not be initialized — the user needs to run dr-vault init on the host
